Lessons Learned from My UCLA Interior Design Foundation Program
The hands-on projects are where it really clicks. Drafting, rendering, and digital presentations turn ideas into something you can actually see and feel. Real-world exercises, from residential rooms to commercial layouts and home staging, challenge students to think about how people move through and experience a space, blending creativity with practical problem-solving.
The program is also all about finding the balance between structure and imagination. You learn the rules of design, like proportion, scale, and composition, but also how to bend them, mix them up, and re-imagine what a space can be. That mix of precision and creativity is what makes design so exciting.
Beyond the technical skills, UCLA’s program teaches a bigger-picture way of thinking. It provides tools to approach projects with confidence and intention, while helping students develop a clear vision for how a space should feel and function. It’s not just about learning the rules, it’s about learning how to push them, experiment, and bring ideas to life in ways that truly resonate. Every assignment pushes creativity further and helps build the confidence to tackle bigger, more complex design challenges. By the end of the program, students have a toolkit that prepares them to create spaces that are thoughtful, innovative, and ready to inspire.
